A modern rarity - Polar Bear stamp PFE 20 II

On 01.04.2006 a new design of the ATM-label sold from vending machines was introduced. The motive, a polar bear, was of course perfect for sale in the Arctic Longyearbyen Post Office, Spitzbergen. There was one obstackle however, Longyearbyen Post Office had no vending machine! Hence the PFT (Postens frimerketjeneste) ordered a very limited number of 8,50 kr stamps (priority rate for Europe) from the printer, and all of these were sent to Spitzbergen where they were placed for sale in June 2006. This Polar Bear stamps naturally turned out to be very popular among tourists. However, stamp collectors are everywhere, and relatively quickly it was realized that these stamps were different from the ones sold by PFT in Oslo. The back-paper was thin and yellowish and the stamp itself was on fluorescent paper. PFT withdraw the unsold quantity of stamps, and these were offered to the public in Frimerkeposten in November 2006. PFT told nobody about the quantity they offered, but it is now known that the number of stamps they got back from Spitzbergen was extremely limited, 500 only.
